Practicing Yoga Together

Writer's picture: LauraLaura

When we think of yoga sometimes we think of a primarily individual practice. After all, it's all about developing the relationship between various aspects of the self - with the self. A home practice, a personal practice is often done alone. Even going to a public class and moving with other people can still be about the self, or even feel lonely. Some of the busiest classes I've attended, where there's hardly room for you and your mat felt the most individual. So if you're finding yourself willing connection with others into your practice here are some tips on how to integrate practicing with others into your life.

Sign up for a private group class

Gather your yoga-minded friends and family and sign up for a private class together. This can be an incredible way to forge friendships, deepen connections and have fun! Private group classes are designed around you as a group as well as tailored to individual needs. Have a member of the group that has been doing yoga for years and needs a class that reflects that, as well as a member whose just beginning their yoga journey - not a problem. Private group classes are an excellent way to have a fun filled relaxed class with those you love, perfectly tailored to you all. It just so happens that this October I'm offering 70% off online private group sessions so book from October 1st before the offer runs out!

Bring your practice outdoors

This may not feel like the best idea seeing as the leaves are turning and the weather is growing colder but practicing yoga outdoors can be exhilarating. Sharing this with someone else or a group of loved ones can be even more rewarding. Besides the general sense of camaraderie this can help you deepen your connection to each other as well as your individual practice. Sharing thoughts and feelings after a practice is one of the best ways to deepen your yoga practice. Enjoying yoga outside in nature or a park, followed by a discussion on everyone's individual experiences can bring an entirely new aspect to your practice.

Practice other aspects other than asana with friends

Yoga is not confined to just a movement class. There are so many wonderful aspects to yoga that can be incredible to explore both alone and with loved ones. Pranayama, meditation, Ayurvedic practices (e.g. diet, lifestyle etc...) and philosophy are just some of the aspects of yoga you can explore with loved ones. Maybe leading one another through a meditation or pranayama technique. Trying new recipes based on Ayurveda, reading books about yoga or discussing yoga philosophy can all strengthen your relationships with each other and the self.

Try something new together

Perhaps you and your loved ones are new to yoga. Yoga can be very overwhelming, with 5000 years of history, countless styles and schools as well as a huge diversity in what yoga can look like knowing where to start can be daunting. For more a breakdown on yoga click here and for tips on how to get started click here. Starting a practice together can be a beautiful thing. When I started yoga I would practice with my mum and sister in the evenings, it was an amazing way to introduce all of us to the world of yoga and help each other keep up the practice. We all had a sense of we're all in this together and found it fun as well as a great way to destress after school or work. So if you're thinking of starting a yoga practice gather your loved ones and sign up to a class together, see what happens!
