The Benefits of Online Yoga

While there are many benefits to the traditional in person yoga classes held at your local studio, gym or community centre, the benefits of online yoga can be immense. They're not just a pandemic necessity.

 

Online classes are not just for lockdowns, they can be enjoyed during normal life too.

 

Convenience

One of the biggest benefits of practicing yoga online with an instructor is simply the convenience. Being able to simply join a call from the comfort of your own home or work space and enjoy a class without the hassle of commuting to your nearest in person classes can free up a lot of time and stress from your day.

I know I'm not the only one who has spent many a savasana worrying about making it back in time for my next scheduled appointment. Not to mention the unplanned pre-yoga jog after waking up late for an early morning class. Completely frazzled isn't the best way to start a yoga class nor a great way to end it. While working towards quietening the mind during savasana is helpful, sometimes its not always possible or even worse you have to leave early and give up that sweet relaxation time all together! By enjoying an online class - whether regularly or just from time to time, you can enjoy the entirety of the class maybe even with time to spare.


This is assuming there is a yoga class near you that is accessible, reasonably priced, and easy to get to. Some don't have that luxury. Whether you live rurally, have a condition that makes getting to classes difficult, or simply don't drive, that doesn't mean that yoga classes shouldn't be available to you. Online classes require zero commute, and most of us have an internet connection these days making it easier than ever to enjoy a yoga class.


Community

One of the most amazing benefits I've found from in person classes is the sense of community that can arise. I've also felt the sense of exclusion when joining pre-established long running classes with a loyal clientele who aren't particularly welcoming to newcomers. It stings. The beauty of online classes is you can be as social a butterfly as you wish, there is no pressure. The online arena lends itself to building a community, showing up early to class to chat with the other attendees just like in person. As well as seeing a familiar set of faces each week but with no added pressure for chit chat if that's not your thing.


Confidence building

A fabulous benefit of online yoga lessons is the building up of confidence. Perhaps you are new to the world of yoga, or dislike exercising in front of other people for whatever reason. Perhaps you suffer from anxiety and the thought of an in person class full of strangers is not doable right now. That's okay, that doesn't mean you should have to push yourself towards something you're not ready for, nor miss out on good yoga instruction and an opportunity to deepen your practice. Online yoga means you can enjoy yoga classes from your own safe space, with more control and build your confidence at your own pace.


Comfort

Another wonderful benefit of online yoga is the fact it is done from your own safe space. Whether that's your bedroom, living room, office at lunchtime - it's your choice! You can turn that space into a relaxing oasis of yoga goodness - I'm talking candles; music; essential oils - all the good stuff! It means once class ends you don't have to be booted out of that beautiful space before you're ready either. You can enjoy savasana for as long as you want with all the props and home comforts you could ever need. This is particularly amazing for restorative classes but just as wonderful for more energetic flows too.
