How to Practice Yoga Online

Whether it's been a while since joining an online class or you're a newcomer to the concept, not to worry, practicing yoga online from the comfort of your own home has never been easier.

First check your online yoga provider's instructions to know how to access their classes. Whether it's on Zoom, Google Hangouts, Skype etc... be prepared and ensure you know what platform you are using and how to join a call, control the camera and microphone and end a call. This will save you unneeded stress when it comes to joining your new class. If you find the world of video calling confusing try not to worry, there are plenty of how to videos on these platforms as well as youtube. Remember you can always contact your yoga teacher for more information if needed.

Next ensure you have the appropriate equipment. No I don't mean a fancy yoga mat or lululemons. Online classes don't always require you to have your camera on but some do so check and ensure you have a camera and microphone connected to your device. Make sure you have enough space to lay out your mat or towel and wear comfortable clothes you can move about in that won't restrict movement or obscure the alignment of your body. Remember us yoga teachers are looking to ensure you have appropriate alignment in order to prevent injury so super baggy clothes can sometimes obscure our view.

One of the reasons practicing online is so amazing is because it is in your own safe space. Whether that be your living room, bedroom, office, garden etc... This means you can set your space up in whatever way you wish. From surrounding yourself with plenty of props, blankets, or candles to knowing you're in your very own space free of judgement and one you are in complete control off. Practicing online is so simple and has so many benefits. From cutting that commute out to actually be able to attend a yoga class when time is tight, to being able to carve out time for yourself worry and judgement free. For those with anxiety or depression sometimes an online class can be much more accessible than an in person one due to the nature of control and level of comfort your own space provides.
